The credit repair industry generates billions of dollars in revenue each year. But what do credit repair companies actually do, and can you do it yourself? In most cases, the answer is yes.
What Credit Repair Companies Do
Most credit repair companies perform services that you can do yourself for free:
- Pull your credit reports (free at AnnualCreditReport.com)
- Send dispute letters to the credit bureaus
- Send debt validation letters to collectors
- Follow up on disputes
The Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA)
⚠️ Know the Law: Due to widespread fraud, Congress passed the Credit Repair Organizations Act (15 U.S.C. §1679). Any company claiming they can “fix” your credit must comply with strict federal regulations.
Under CROA:
- Companies cannot charge advance fees before services are fully performed
- They cannot guarantee specific results
- They must provide a 3-day right to cancel
- They must provide a written contract with specific disclosures
- They cannot advise you to make false statements to bureaus or creditors
Red Flags to Watch For
Be wary of any company that:
- Guarantees they can remove accurate negative information
- Charges fees before performing any services
- Tells you not to contact credit bureaus directly
- Suggests creating a “new identity” (this is illegal)
- Promises a specific score increase
The Self-Advocacy Advantage
When you handle disputes yourself:
- It’s free — exercising your FCRA rights costs nothing
- You control the process — you decide what to dispute and when
- You learn your rights — knowledge that protects you long-term
- Direct communication — bureaus and furnishers respond to you directly
- No risk of scams — you’re in control
